Centre Stage School of Dance and Performing Arts has once again outdone itself with its mesmerising production of 'Sleeping Beauty'. As a young person who acts and dances, I thoroughly enjoyed watching other young performers work together to perform this amazing show! Before watching the show I had forgotten parts of the story for Sleeping Beauty but the magical and expressive storytelling through dance made what was happening in the story very clear to me.
Dance, at its core, is about expression, and the Centre Stage dancers conveyed a range of emotions through their movements. From the innocence of Briar Rose's early scenes to the dark presence of the evil Maleficent, each emotion was vividly brought to life. Their expressive choreography captured the hearts of the audience, drawing them into the story.
Other aspects that made the show extraordinary were the lavish costumes and stunning visuals and set. This really made the show complete as it made the audience feel more a part of the story.
Every single performer played an important role in making this production a success. Some personal favourite moments of mine were when the littlest performers took to the stage, bringing the cute factor to the show, which was greatly loved by the audience. I also liked the moments when there was a giant group of young people singing and dancing collectively on stage, which was visually very impressive. I personally enjoyed the solo performed by the Jewel Soloist (Valerie Yugan-Li) who performed with passion and technique and also stood out in the other dances she appeared in.
The four Fairy Godmothers brought lots of comedy and did a brilliant job with their lines, and I really enjoyed the switch to the younger performers who played their mini versions.
I loved watching Princess Briar Rose (Francesca Vincent) and Maleficent (Isabella James) as they took on the role of the two leads in the show. Their performances were so expressive and believable.
In conclusion, this rendition of 'Sleeping Beauty' is a testament to the exceptional talent and dedication of the performers and creative team at Centre Stage, especially School Principal, Zoe Mather, who is clearly adored by all her students.
